Abstract
Acute pancreatitis by azathioprine sometimes has been reported in Crohn¡¯s disease but is rare in other diseases. We report a 30-year-old male who developed acute pancreatitis in the course of treatment with azathioprine for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. The level of serum amylase and lipase were elevated. The abdominal CT scan revealed diffuse enlargement of the pancreas. There was no history of alcohol abuse or gallbladder disease. We considered azathioprine as the cause of acute pancreatitis. He was recovered with conventional therapy and withdrawal of azathiprine. Five days later, symptoms were disappeared and serum amylase and lipase were normalized. We administered azathioprine to the patient. The patient complained of abdominal pain and the level of serum amylase and lipase were elevated after 6 hours of readministration of azathioprine. His symptoms subsided after withdrawal of azathiprine and serum amylase and lipase level returned to normal within several days.
